Northern Vietnam by Motorbike: The Ultimate Adventure

Exploring Northern Vietnam on a motorbike is a legendary experience for thrill-seekers and culture enthusiasts alike. Motorbikes are a staple of Vietnamese life; nearly everyone rides one, making it the most immersive way to connect with the culture. This journey lets you feel like a local, giving you access to hidden routes, remote mountain paths, and secluded villages far off the tourist trail. You’ll experience the freedom of the open road, the thrill of winding mountain passes, and the raw beauty of Vietnam’s landscapes—all from the seat of a motorbike.

Day 1: Kick-Off in Hanoi - Motorbike Setup and Traffic Orientation

Our adventure kicks off in Hanoi, where we’ll visit the motorbike rental shop to choose the perfect ride for the journey ahead. Vietnam offers a wide variety of motorbikes, from scooters and semi-automatics to manual 150cc models and even professional 250cc and more bikes. Based on our experience, the Honda XR is the ideal choice for this adventure.

Once you’ve selected your bike, we’ll take it to the lively streets of Hanoi for a test ride, giving you a chance to get comfortable with the bustling Vietnamese traffic. At first, Vietnamese roads may seem chaotic, with streams of motorbikes weaving unpredictably. However, locals navigate with ease, following “unspoken rules” of staying calm, riding predictably, and embracing the flow. We’ll guide you through these essentials to ensure a smooth start to your journey.

Beyond the bike, we’ll carve out time to explore Hanoi’s historic landmarks, vibrant markets, and savor authentic Vietnamese cuisine, immersing ourselves in the city’s rich culture.

The best motorbike for the adventure: Honda XR

Conquer Vietnam’s rugged terrain with the Honda XR 150cc, the top choice for exploring the mountainous north and off-road trails. This reliable bike packs enough power to carry 1 or 2 riders through rivers, mud tracks, and challenging backroads with ease.

Equipped with a sturdy rack for your bag, a secure phone holder for navigation, a map, a D-lock, and bungee cords, it’s designed for all your travel needs.

Note: The Honda XR 150cc is ideal for experienced riders due to its power and handling. New riders can take a lesson to ensure they’re ready to ride.

Beginners alternative: Honda Future

The Honda Future 125cc is the perfect semi-automatic bike for Vietnam’s roads, combining power and ease of use. Ideal for beginners, it eliminates the need for manual gear changes, making it a more accessible choice for less experienced riders.

The Honda Future ensures safety and reliability on paved roads and light trails. However, it’s less suited for mud and rough terrain.

This bike comes equipped with a D-lock, local helmet, map, luggage rack, and optional driving lessons for added confidence.

Vietnamese legendary motorbike: Detech Win

The Detech Win 127cc is a top choice for riders exploring Vietnam, often referred to as the “Honda Win.” Its performance shines in the mountains, offering more power than 110cc models while maintaining ease of use.

This universal motorbike is built for both roads and off-road adventures, making it a versatile option for any journey. It’s beginner-friendly yet powerful enough to satisfy experienced riders. With the option to fit side racks, it’s ready to carry your gear wherever the road takes you.

From Hanoi to Sapa

Embark on an exhilarating journey from Hanoi to Sapa, exploring breathtaking mountain passes, serene valleys, and remote villages. Ride through the stunning Thung Khe and Khau Pha Passes, cross the tranquil Da River by ferry, and experience the rich culture of Northern Vietnam. Conclude your adventure in Sapa with trekking through terraced fields and an overnight stay with a local family. Perfect for riders seeking thrilling roads, natural beauty, and authentic cultural encounters.

Day 2: Hanoi to Mai Chau (160 km – 5 hours riding)

Our adventure of day 2 begins with a short and easy ride to ease into the trip and get comfortable with the motorbikes. Leaving the hustle of Hanoi, we’ll head towards the countryside, passing lush rice fields and small villages.

The journey takes us through the Hoa Binh Hydroelectric Dam, Vietnam’s first and largest hydroelectric project, before ascending the scenic Thung Khe Pass. This gentle mountain pass offers spectacular views of the Mai Chau Valley below, a perfect introduction to Vietnam’s breathtaking landscapes.

We’ll arrive in Mai Chau, a serene valley inhabited by the Thai ethnic minority. Spend the evening in a traditional stilt house, enjoying a home-cooked meal and soaking in the peaceful ambiance of this rural haven.

Day 3: Mai Chau to Phu Yen (140 km – 5 hours riding)

We continue getting used to our motorbikes before we hit the real challenging paths. This ride is taking us deeper into Northern Vietnam’s rugged terrain. We’ll cruise along winding mountain roads, crossing vibrant green valleys and terraced rice fields.

One of the highlights is the ferry crossing over the scenic Da River, where the calm waters and surrounding mountains create a stunning backdrop. From there, the road becomes more remote, with fewer towns and more spectacular views, testing your riding skills and endurance.

We’ll reach the quiet town of Phu Yen in the late afternoon, a charming stopover surrounded by rolling hills. Rest and prepare for an even more rewarding journey the next day.

Day 4: Phu Yen to Sapa via Khau Pha Pass (280 km – 8 hours riding)

This day will be one of the most challenging but rewarding part of the trip. We’ll ride through the iconic Khau Pha Pass, one of Vietnam’s longest and most beautiful mountain passes. Known as “Sky Gate,” this pass offers panoramic views of terraced fields and lush valleys below.

The road demands patience and skill, with winding turns and steep ascents, but the stunning scenery makes every moment worthwhile. Along the way, we’ll pass through ethnic minority villages and witness the vibrant local culture that thrives in these highlands.

By evening, we’ll arrive in Sapa, a charming mountain town nestled in the Hoang Lien Son range. Here, we’ll trade our motorbikes for trekking boots, exploring the stunning landscapes of Sapa on foot. Spend the night with a local family, enjoying their warm hospitality, traditional food, and an authentic glimpse into their daily life.

Sapa

Immerse yourself in Sapa’s natural and cultural wonders with a two-day trekking journey through terraced rice fields, enchanting bamboo forests, and traditional villages. Stay overnight in a cozy homestay, experience the warm hospitality of local ethnic communities, and explore hidden trails and breathtaking mountain scenery. A perfect blend of adventure and cultural discovery!

Day 5: Trekking Through Sapa’s Rice Terraces and Villages

After 3 days of riding, we’ll trade motorbikes for trekking boots to explore Sapa’s inspiring landscapes. Our trek begins with a journey through the region’s iconic terraced rice fields, cascading down the mountains. These fields, cultivated by local ethnic groups, create a breathtaking tapestry of greens and golds depending on the season.

We’ll pass through traditional villages like Cat Cat, Lao Chai, and Ta Van, home to the Hmong and Dzay ethnic minorities. Along the way, you’ll experience their unique culture, traditional crafts, and warm hospitality.

As the sun sets, we’ll arrive at a cozy homestay in a local village, where we’ll share a delicious home-cooked meal with our hosts, gaining an authentic glimpse into their daily lives.

Day 6: Exploring Bamboo Forests and Sapa's Hidden Gems

On the second day of our trekking, we’ll continue our trek deeper into Sapa’s rugged beauty. The trail takes us through the enchanting bamboo forests of Hoang Lien National Park, where tall bamboo stalks create a serene and mystical atmosphere. Along the way, you’ll encounter stunning waterfalls, crystal-clear streams, and vibrant wildflowers.

We’ll visit lesser-known villages, far from the tourist crowds, where you can truly immerse yourself in the peaceful rhythms of rural life. Enjoy the sound of nature as you hike along paths surrounded by lush greenery and dramatic mountain vistas.

After a fulfilling day of exploration, we’ll return to Sapa town in the evening, where you can relax and reflect on the incredible memories created during this two-day trek.

Day 7: Sapa to Ha Giang (270 km – 8 hours riding)

Sapa to Ha Giang journey goes through some of Northern Vietnam’s most captivating landscapes. The day begins with a going out of Sapa’s misty mountains, offering panoramic views of terraced rice fields and lush valleys.

The ride takes us along winding roads through scenic mountain passes, remote villages, and vibrant countryside. As the journey progresses, the terrain becomes more rugged, with sections of challenging roads that require patience and skill.

We’ll arrive in Ha Giang by evening, the gateway to one of Vietnam’s most iconic motorbike routes—the Ha Giang Loop. Rest and recharge as we prepare for the next chapter of our adventure.

Ha Giang Loop: 2 Days of riding most iconic motorbike roads in Vietnam

The Ha Giang Loop is one of Vietnam’s most iconic motorbike routes, featuring dramatic mountain landscapes, rugged passes, and vibrant ethnic culture. Over two days, we’ll explore its highlights, including the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, remote villages, and breathtaking vistas.

Day 8: Ha Giang to Dong Van via Yen Minh and Quan Ba (150 km – 5 hours riding)

The adventure begins as we leave Ha Giang and enter the Dong Van Karst Plateau, a UNESCO Global Geopark. Along the way, we’ll ride to Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate, a viewpoint offering stunning panoramas of winding roads and the lush Quan Ba Valley below. This area is famous for the Twin Mountains, a striking natural feature.

Continuing on, we’ll pass through the peaceful town of Yen Minh, surrounded by green valleys and dense pine forests. It’s an ideal place for short breaks to take in the serene landscape. By evening, we’ll reach Dong Van, a charming historic town known for its traditional stone houses and lively cafes. Here, we’ll settle into a cozy guesthouse and enjoy authentic regional cuisine for the night.

Day 9: Dong Van to Ha Giang via Ma Pi Leng Pass and Meo Vac (170 km – 6 hours riding)

Our adventure continues through the most spectacular sections of the Ha Giang Loop. Leaving Dong Van, we’ll ride along the Ma Pi Leng Pass, known as the “King of Mountain Passes.” This stretch offers jaw-dropping views of towering limestone cliffs and the emerald Nho Que River far below, one of the most breathtaking sceneries in all of Vietnam.

From there, the journey continues through Meo Vac, a vibrant market town nestled deep in the mountains. The cultural richness of this area is evident in the colorful traditional attire of the local ethnic minorities. As we head back toward Ha Giang, the winding roads and serene landscapes provide a fitting end to this unforgettable loop.

Day 10: Ha Giang to Hanoi (300 km – 8 hours riding)

After completing the exhilarating Ha Giang Loop, we’ll make the journey back to Hanoi via the highway. While the ride is less scenic, it’s faster and smoother, giving us time to reflect on the incredible experiences and stunning landscapes of the past few days.

Hanoi to Cat Ba: Relaxation After the long hours on the motorbike

After an exhilarating 10 days of motorbike adventures through Vietnam’s mountains, we’ll head to Cat Ba Island for some well-deserved relaxation and exploration. This coastal escape offers a perfect balance of chill and adventure.

Unwind on a boat trip through the stunning Lan Ha Bay, where you’ll kayak, swim in warm seas, and glide past dramatic limestone karsts. Enjoy a laid-back trek in Cat Ba’s lush mountains and take time to soak in the island’s tranquil vibe. Finally, we’ll return to Hanoi to explore the vibrant city, shop for souvenirs, and savor one last taste of Vietnam’s charm.

Day 11: Hanoi to Cat Ba Island (170 km – 5 hours riding + ferry)

The journey from Hanoi to Cat Ba is an enjoyable ride through scenic countryside roads, passing through small villages and fields. The route includes a ferry crossing to Cat Ba Island, offering the first glimpses of its lush hills and waters.

Upon arrival, settle into your accommodations and enjoy a relaxing evening. Take a walk along the lively waterfront, explore the local market, or indulge in fresh seafood at one of the island’s charming restaurants.

Day 12: Explore Lan Ha Bay by Boat and National Park Trekking

We start the day by exploring the breathtaking Lan Ha Bay on a boat tour. This quieter counterpart to Halong Bay features stunning limestone karsts, hidden lagoons, and floating fishing villages.

Enjoy kayaking through serene waters, swimming in secluded coves, and relaxing on the deck surrounded by the bay’s magical scenery. For lunch, savor freshly prepared local food while taking in the views. Return to Cat Ba in the late afternoon, where you can unwind and enjoy the peaceful island atmosphere or rest on the beach.

The afternoon we either choose to enjoy beach life or easy trekking in Cat Ba National Park.

Day 13: Cat Ba Island to Hanoi (170 km – 5 hours riding)

Ride back to Hanoi, retracing your scenic route through the countryside and taking a ferry back to the mainland. Once in Hanoi, enjoy your final evening exploring the city.

Take time to shop for souvenirs, visit bustling markets like Dong Xuan or Night Market, and savor one last Vietnamese meal. Reflect on the incredible memories of your journey before preparing for your departure.

Day 14: Hanoi sightseeing and souvenir shopping
